Troubleshooting LAN Connections

Although Wireless devices are taking over the world at an ever-increasing rate with no sign of slowing down there are still plenty of us that maintain our Desktop PC, whether it be a Gaming machine or just a simple office Desktop PC, you can always count on having a few difficulties with your LAN connection over the year.

If you currently DO NOT have internet on your Windows 10 Desktop or Ethernet connected PC – Follow these Troubleshooting Instructions:

Firstly if you have a 3rd Party Solution Firewall begin by disabling it temporarily

Right + Click the Network Connection Icon in the System Tray

Select Troubleshoot problems by Left + Click

Once Windows Network Diagnostics has completed check to see if your connection problems have been resolved if not do the following:

Reseat by disconnecting/reconnecting the Ethernet Cable at both your PC and the Internet Router/Modem you are connected to and check again

Replace your Ethernet Cable with a spare cable and Power Cycle your Modem/Router by disconnecting it from power for 10 seconds and Restart your Windows PC and check your connection again

If your connection is still having difficulties then do the following:

Right + Click Network Connection Icon on the System Tray and Left + Click Open Network & Internet Settings

Left + Click on “Change adapter options

Once the Network Connections window opens Ensure your Ethernet or Local Area Network adapter is enabled by Left + Clicking the Adapter

Adapter Properties

Look between the Local Path / Directories and the list of Adapters below and verify the Adapter is currently Enabled

If the Adapter is currently Enabled than Right + Click the Adapter and go to Properties



Verify there is a check in the box next to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) by Left + Clicking on it and then click the Properties button below

When Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) window opens verify Obtain IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically are selected and Left + Click the OK button

Left + Click the OK button on Ethernet Properties window and then check to see if your connection problem has been resolved

The last steps are to boot into Safe Mode with Networking and attempt a connection test by opening a browser window and loading a website.

While you are in safe mode run an AntiVirus and Malware scan removing any Spyware and Viruses that may cause connection difficulties and then reboot your Windows PC.

At this point if you are still not back online Run Troubleshoot Problems one last time and if the issue is not resolved than Perform a PIN Hole reset on your ISP supplied Internet Modem/Router and Restart your Windows PC

If your connection is not re-established at the end of this guide check with your Internet Service Provider to find out if you are experiencing an outage and to check the IP address assigned to the modem is current.
