How to install Windows 10

In case you have not done so by now, your chance to install and upgrade to Windows 10 is about to run out. In a little more then 24 hours from the time of this post Microsofts free upgrade to Windows 10 will be over.

To that effect here is how to upgrade to Windows 10:

  • Step 1: Go to Download the Windows 10 ISO image from Microsoft’s web site. You can also download the web installer from the page and just choose to upgrade your PC, whichever is the easier for you.
  • Step 2: If you are installing on a desktop PC or laptop with Windows already on it, you’ll be prompted to immediately start your upgrade process. If you prefer, you can burn it to a disk or create a bootable USB flash drive.
  • Step 3: Install it mostly by clicking the Next button, making sure to choose Upgrade when prompted. (Keep in mind Windows 10 is only provided as a free upgrade. You cannot clean install it, there are no license keys avaliable at this point.)

Note — With Windows 10 being released, you are going to need a valid Windows license key for Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to preform this platform upgrade.

When you first boot your computer you’ll see a screen like this one:

Click the next button and you will be taken to the following install button screen.

Then choose if you want to upgrade your exisiting Windows platform or preform a clean install of the new platform.

Note — Recommend you choose to upgrade rather then clean install as there have been some reported problems.

At this point you need to create a partition, or format the original and create a new one to use for your new install. WARNING!!! — Formatting your hard drive will erase all data on the drive.

Grab a cup of coffee and wait as Windows begins it’s install.

After the reboot your installation is done, it’s time to begin configuring settings. I recommend the express settings you can always change the settings later, and customize them to your needs.

Unlike previous versions of Windows (other then 8 or 8.1) you can sign into a Microsoft account as your user account for the computer. Additional features of Windows 10 are activated only on Microsoft enabled accounts.

As OneDrive is integrated into Windows 10 you can choose to configure it here.

Now we get another wait screen as Windows prepares itself.

And voila are upgrade and install is complete, you are now a Windows 10 user.
